Thesis Title: MORPHOLOGICAL DIVERSIFICATION OF PREHISTORIC POPULATIONS FROM ARGENTINA CENTRAL-WEST DURING LATE HOLOCENE

Dr. Ivan Perez

About

I have a diploma in Anthropology and I am currently developing my PhD at University of La Plata (UNLP)(Argentina).
My PhD thesis is focused on the evolutionary and ecological patterns that shape morphological variation among human populations from South America. I am particularly interested at studying the relative importance of evolutionary and ecological factors in the craniofacial morphological variation in geographically bounded areas and restricted time intervals. In this context, I am focused on Central West of Argentina, which is considered the southern boundary of pre-Columbian maize agriculture. The aim of my project is to study through traditional and 3D morphometrics, the craniofacial diversification processes in populations which inhabited this region during the Late Holocene (ca. 4000-400 BP).
Additionally, I am working on examining the explanations used to account for the morphological and physiological adaptations in human populations. In this sense, I want to conceptualize "adaptation" from a modular approach and contrast it with functional explanations (departing from non-modular approaches).
